About Digital X-Rays

A visual examination, however thorough, sees only a third of each tooth. Decay hides between teeth, infections brew silently at root tips, bone levels drop out of sight, and wisdom teeth develop unseen. Digital X-rays are how we find these problems while they are still small — which is when they are cheapest, easiest and least painful to fix.

Our digital system in the State College, PA area produces images in seconds on a screen we can enlarge, enhance and share with you — so you see exactly what we see. Modern digital sensors use up to 90% less radiation than traditional film, and we take X-rays selectively, based on your individual risk, never by rote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are dental X-rays safe?

Yes. Digital dental X-rays involve extremely small radiation doses — a set of bitewings is comparable to a few hours of natural background radiation, and far less than a medical CT scan. We also use lead aprons and take images only when clinically needed.

How often do I need X-rays?

It depends on your risk. Low-risk adults may need bitewings every 18–24 months; patients with active decay, gum disease or ongoing treatment need them more often. Children are imaged selectively as development requires. We follow your individual profile, not a blanket schedule.

Can I have X-rays while pregnant?

Routine X-rays are usually postponed during pregnancy unless needed for an urgent problem, in which case shielding makes them very safe. Always tell us if you are or might be pregnant.

Why do I need X-rays if nothing hurts?

Because most dental disease is painless until it is advanced. The cavity between two teeth, the abscess forming silently, the bone quietly receding — X-rays catch them at the stage where treatment is simple.
